DT
At Hillbrook, Design and Technology is an inspiring, creative and practical subject which enables our students to develop their skills and knowledge in real-life contexts or concerning real-life issues. Pupils will learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Pupils are challenged in ways that enable them to work independently, through designing, problem solving and creating.
Our curriculum encourages our pupils to look at the world and empowers them to think creatively about ways to improve it. We encourage them to consider their resources and materials so they can create products that are safe and do not harm our environment. When developing products, children will consider their own and others’ needs, wants and values. For example, in food technology, pupils reflect on what makes a healthy, balanced diet. Each pupil will get the opportunity to take part in three design technology topics a year (one a term) one of which will be food technology based.
Hello! We are Ms Badar, a Year 6 teacher and Ms Burden, a Year 1 teacher. Together, we are the subject leaders for D&T at Hillbrook Primary School. We love teaching D&T and leading it across the school!
I particularly enjoy teaching Food Technology because it has a huge impact on young people’s learning by contributing to their creativity and practical skills. D&T teaches students how to take risks so that they become more resourceful and equips them with the ability to problem solve. In addition, I love to eat so it is a handy skill to have! – Ms Badar
D&T provides so many opportunities for children to be creative, curious and solve real life problems. I studied Textile Design at university, designing interior products, so I love getting hands on in lessons! I encourage the children to carefully select their resources when developing a product and consider their needs and wants as they embark on a new project. – Ms Burden
