Maths at Hillbrook
My name is Hannah Vasquez; I have been the maths leader at Hillbrook since 2019. Originally a Reception and Year 1 teacher, I particularly enjoy seeing children developing their very early understanding of number and beginning to grow a passion for the subject.
In my role as Maths Leader, I have been able to delve deeper into Key Stage 2 and it is a joy to see how children build upon those early foundations in preparation for Secondary school and beyond.
My current passion project is breaking down the barriers of Maths Anxiety for children, parents and staff and look forward to us developing this work even further at Hillbrook in the coming years.
Having personally loved maths from a very young age, I also enjoy regularly working with our most talented mathematicians to ensure they reach their potential through the use of additional challenges and enrichment opportunities.
At Hillbrook, we believe that everyone, no matter their starting point, can learn and progress in Mathematics. Our long-term aim is to teach an ambitious, connected curriculum accessible to all pupils from Nursery to Year 6. We want to give children an education of the highest standard and aim for excellence in all of our lessons.
We want all children to enjoy Mathematics and to experience success in the subject, with the ability to reason mathematically. Our approach to the teaching of Mathematics develops children's ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
At each stage of learning, children should be able to demonstrate a deep, conceptual understanding of the material and be able to build upon this over time.
Our children need to develop the necessary skills to make them deep thinkers, acquiring maths skills that can be recalled quickly, transferred and applied in diverse contexts. They need to be able to make rich connections across all areas of Mathematics and use their knowledge in other subjects.
We are dedicated to developing children’s curiosity about Mathematics.
We feel it is important for all children to have a love of and lasting confidence in Mathematics to best prepare them for later life. We are committed to ensuring that children can recognise the significance of Mathematics in the wider world and that they are also able to use their mathematical skills and understanding confidently in their lives.
Our curriculum aims to make sure that all children have a secure and solid foundation and that their knowledge is transferable so that they are equipped for secondary school and life. We encourage our pupils to become lifelong learners; by the end of Key Stage Two, children will leave Hillbrook fully prepared for the next step in their mathematical education.
